Why saltwater is particularly demanding

Saltwater accelerates corrosion of metals through an electrochemical process in which chlorides break down protective oxide layers and enable galvanic corrosion, particularly where different metals meet. Steel needs an effective surface protection system — paint, galvanising or a stainless alloy — to withstand the exposure, and any damage to that protection quickly leads to localised corrosion that spreads beneath the surface.

GRP's durability in marine environments

GRP's glass fibre and resin system does not corrode electrochemically, eliminating the primary degradation mechanism affecting metals in saltwater. For extra aggressive exposure, for example ports handling fuel or chemicals, the resin system should be selected based on the specific chemical load.

Slip resistance in wet, algae-prone environments

What to consider when designing for a marine environment

  • Whether the structure is permanently submerged, in a splash zone, or only exposed to salt spray
  • UV exposure over time, which can affect certain resin systems without suitable surface protection
  • Fixing material — metallic fasteners should be stainless steel or another suitable material, even within an otherwise corrosion-resistant GRP structure
  • Any loading from wave or wind forces in addition to normal service loads

Frequently asked questions

Can GRP be used in direct contact with saltwater?

Yes, GRP is not affected by saltwater the way metals are because it doesn't corrode electrochemically. The right resin should still be chosen based on the specific exposure.

Do fixings also need to be corrosion resistant?

Yes. If metallic fixings are used within an otherwise corrosion-resistant GRP structure, they should be stainless steel or another suitable material to avoid becoming the weak link.

Does UV radiation affect GRP in marine environments?

GRP can be affected by prolonged UV exposure if it lacks suitable surface protection. Ask about the product's UV resistance when selecting for exposed outdoor environments.
