Rail

New hybrid GRP and steel railway platform — Robroyston Station, Glasgow

Glasgow, United Kingdom

Two brand new platforms at Robroyston Station in Glasgow were built using a hybrid steel and GRP solution recommended by Dura Composites and designed to meet Network Rail's technical standards for railway infrastructure. The solution combines the load capacity of steel with the anti-slip performance and abrasion resistance of the GRP surface, which showed negligible deterioration after one million simulated footfalls in testing. The scheme was jointly funded by the city council, Network Rail and the regional transport partnership, and much of the installation was completed while the line remained operational.

Energy and battery storage

Non-conductive fencing and access structures for a converter station — IFA2

United Kingdom

During construction of a high voltage interconnector between the UK and France, capable of powering up to one million homes, the client required all surrounding fencing, cable trough covers and access structures to be entirely non-conductive and non-metallic. Dura Composites supplied complete GRP solutions for both temporary and permanent fencing, gates and walkways around the site to meet strict authorised-access safety requirements.

Marine and offshore

Corrosion resistant flooring in a saltwater environment — Noss-on-Dart Marina

United Kingdom

At a marina in south west England a complete flooring structure was built around a boat hoist facility using load bearing GRP structural profiles and anti-slip grating. GRP was specified over steel because of its resistance to constant saltwater exposure, which otherwise leads to rapid corrosion and recurring maintenance costs. The open mesh structure provides effective drainage while maintaining high load capacity and slip resistance.

Relevance for Swedish projectsThe same saltwater corrosion challenges apply in Swedish ports, marinas and coastal facilities, where GRP can replace steel without repeated painting or anti-corrosion treatment.

Construction and infrastructure

GRP permanent formwork for a road overbridge — HS2 A421 Overbridge

Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom

During construction of a new road bridge over a railway, part of the UK's HS2 high speed rail programme, GRP panels were used as permanent formwork for the bridge deck. The solution simplified installation, reduced resource use and improved on-site safety compared with conventional methods, and the panels could be left permanently in the structure instead of being struck after casting.

Complete GRP access structure for an energy sector training facility — Grimsby

Grimsby, United Kingdom

For an energy sector technician training facility in Grimsby, Dura Composites supplied a complete two storey access structure with stairs, kick plates, handrailing and anti-slip grating. Steel was initially considered, but rising steel prices and the risk of corrosion in the coastal environment made GRP the more cost effective and durable choice across the life of the structure.

Water and wastewater

GRP platforms and access covers at a wastewater treatment upgrade — Scaynes Hill, United Kingdom

West Sussex, United Kingdom

During a major upgrade of a wastewater treatment works in southern England, Dura Composites supplied d² range GRP platforms and access covers, including at chemical dosing stations. The solution was chosen to provide safer and more efficient access to critical operational points, while its low weight simplified installation and helped shorten construction time. The project formed part of a multi-year investment programme to maintain and improve water and wastewater infrastructure in the region, and is a clear example of GRP in wastewater treatment in practice.

Energy and battery storage

Non-conductive GRP structures at one of Scotland's largest wind farms — Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm

Moray Firth, Scotland

Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm is one of Scotland's largest renewable energy sites, with 84 turbines and a total capacity of 588 MW. Dura Composites supplied non-conductive GRP grating, handrailing and floor panels suited to the site's electrified environment. The material was chosen because it needed to be non-conductive, meet specific load ratings, be straightforward to install, corrosion resistant and slip resistant — while also matching the site's existing colour scheme. The project shows how GRP wind farm structures handle both electrical safety and the marine environment.

GRP flooring replaces steel across a vehicle fleet — Bevan Group, United Kingdom

West Midlands, United Kingdom

Bevan Group, one of the UK's leading manufacturers of truck and van bodies, replaced heavy steel grating with GRP flooring across its vehicle fleet. The switch delivered a cost effective, slip resistant and maintenance free solution that also met the industry's durability requirements. The company builds more than 60 vehicle bodies every week for some of the UK's largest transport operators, where GRP vehicle flooring is now standard.

Relevance for Swedish projectsGRP flooring is an interesting alternative for Swedish vehicle and machinery manufacturers too, looking to reduce weight and maintenance in their products without compromising on slip resistance or durability.
