Technical information

Load and performance data

The load capacity of GRP depends on the product, span, support conditions, load case and service environment. We issue product-specific load and span tables from the manufacturer for the actual configuration, rather than generic values that risk being applied incorrectly.

The data we provide

Load capacity

Permissible uniformly distributed and point loads by product, mesh pattern and thickness.

Span and deflection

Span tables with a deflection criterion, typically L/200 or as required by the project.

Slip resistance

Tested friction values for the relevant surface finish and exposure, dry and wet.

Fire performance

Classification to the applicable test standard for the selected resin system.

Temperature and chemistry

Service temperature and chemical resistance against the relevant medium.

Fixings

Capacity and recommended installation for clips, clamps and fixings.

What governs the design

  • Deflection usually governs before failure, because GRP has a lower E-modulus than steel.
  • Capacity applies to the stated fibre direction — grating and profiles must be installed with the load-bearing direction as documented.
  • Bearing length, number of supports and continuity affect both load and deflection.
  • Elevated temperature, chemical exposure and long-term load (creep) reduce permissible values.
  • Dynamic loads, vehicle loads and impact require separate assessment.

How to obtain the data

Send us the following and we will return tables and a recommendation for the relevant product:

  • Product or application (grating, profile, stair tread, platform, cable trough).
  • Span and support conditions.
  • Load case: uniformly distributed load (kN/m²), point load (kN) and any vehicle load.
  • Deflection requirement, for example L/200.
  • Service environment: temperature, chemicals, UV, salt water.
  • Fire classification and slip resistance requirements.
  • Opening dimensions, penetrations and fixing conditions.

Stated values are indicative and must be verified by the designer. See technical information and important notices.
