GRP for Stadiums & Arenas
Public venues have high demands for safety, aesthetics and operations. GRP combines slip resistance, design freedom and maintenance-free service on a single surface.
Modern stadiums, sports arenas and event venues are built to host tens of thousands of visitors per match or concert — often outdoors and often in Nordic climate. Materials that withstand this loading must combine load capacity, slip resistance, long service life and an aesthetic that matches the venue's identity. GRP productshave become a natural choice for public spaces, because they deliver all of these properties in one material.
Byggkomposit supplies GRP panels, grating, stair nosings, handrailing and façade elements to football stadiums, ice rinks, swimming halls and concert venues. The material is around one-third of steel's weight, accelerating construction and reducing loads on existing frames during refurbishment. The gelcoat surface can be colour-matched to club or venue colours — or pigmented to mimic stone, concrete or timber.
Properties for public venues
Six reasons to specify fibreglass composites in your next arena or stadium project.
Safe crowd flow
Anti-slip surface copes with thousands of visitors in rain, snow and slush without slip risk on stairs and ramps.
Design flexibility
Colour-matched and shaped to the venue's brand — panels in club colours, logos and patterns.
Fire-rated options
Fire-rated GRP grades meet public venue requirements and national building codes.
UV- and weather-resistant
Retains colour and structure even after years of sun, frost and salty winters in outdoor arenas.
Fast installation
Lightweight and pre-fabricated sections help contractors meet tight project programmes between seasons.
Long service life
30+ years maintenance-free on public-facing surfaces — perfect for venues with long depreciation cycles.
Typical applications in stadiums and arenas
Grandstand stairs and concourses
On grandstand stairs and entry/exit routes, fall and slip risk is highest. GRP stair treads with embedded quartz finish provide permanent slip resistance that is not worn away by thousands of feet per event. Because panels are pre-fabricated, the venue can replace whole stair sections between seasons without recasting the underlying structure.
VIP boxes, ramps and accessibility
For ramps, balconies and VIP areas, GRP panels with smooth surfaces and bespoke colours are used. The material is light enough to retrofit on existing frames without costly strengthening, making it ideal for accessibility upgrades in older arenas.
Façades and aesthetic elements
GRP façade panels can be moulded into complex geometries that would be costly in metal or concrete — perfect for modern arenas with a distinctive architectural identity. The colour is embedded in the gelcoat and requires no repainting even after 20 years of Nordic climate.
Service and back-of-house
Behind the scenes, GRP grating is used in plant rooms, above suspended ceilings and in technical risers. The electrical insulation properties are an added benefit in spaces packed with power cables, lighting and sound rigs.
Design and operation in one material
Few materials combine design-led intent with operational economy. GRP products bring the architect's vision for colour, form and clean surfaces together with the operator's requirement for low maintenance and high safety — year after year, season after season.
