GRP for Battery Storage (BESS)

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are a fast-growing part of the Swedish energy system. GRP products deliver safe, insulating and fast-to-install access infrastructure.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) have become a cornerstone of modern electrical infrastructure — as balancing capacity for renewables, frequency response services and as local support functions in industry and property portfolios. When new BESS sites are built, the materials surrounding battery containers, inverters and DC busbars face new demands. GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) has quickly become the standard choice for access platforms, handrailing and walkways at BESS installations.

Byggkomposit supplies GRP structures to Swedish EPC contractors and utilities expanding battery storage — both for large grid-connected parks and for industrial installations. The material is electrically non-conductive, available in fire-rated grades and light enough that sections can be installed without a crane. That lets a BESS park be completed faster and with a higher safety margin than with traditional steel structures.

Properties suited to BESS installations

Six reasons to specify fibreglass composite in the growing BESS sector.

Electrically non-conductive

GRP does not conduct electricity — critical when working around containerised battery modules and DC busbars.

Fire-rated grades

Fire-rated GRP panels meet high safety requirements in battery containers and service walkways.

Fast install

Pre-assembled sections allow EPC contractors to meet aggressive timelines for new BESS projects.

Anti-slip access

Permanent anti-slip profile in all weathers — important for service technicians working on tight walkways between containers.

Reduced earthing needs

Insulating material simplifies earthing design compared with steel structures in the same environment.

Corrosion-free outdoors

BESS installations stand outdoors for many years — GRP does not rust and needs no protective system.

Applications in modern battery storage sites

Service walkways between containers

Large BESS sites consist of rows of containers with narrow service walkways between them. GRP grating and platforms give staff anti-slip, insulating surfaces to move on — without risk of arcing from cable penetrations or adjacent DC systems. Lightweight sections are easy to lift away during service.

Access platforms and maintenance landings

Tall containers and stacked BESS modules need platforms for access to roofs, ventilation and control equipment. GRP platforms with integrated handrailing deliver a complete, fire-rated solution that can be installed quickly and without welding near live equipment.

Handrailing and fall protection

GRP handrailing around roofs, ramps and container crossings meets working at height requirements without introducing conductive metal into an electrically sensitive environment.

Cable ladders and installation details

GRP pultruded profiles and composite cable trays complement the electrical installation and simplify earthing design. The material is inert to moisture and does not affect EMC properties.

Safe growth in a new industry

The BESS market is growing fast and projects run on short build times. GRP products give developers and EPC contractors a solution that meets safety requirements around high current and enables fast installation.
