GRP walkways

Safe and durable GRP walkways for demanding environments

Byggkomposit supplies complete GRP walkway systems for industry, infrastructure, rooftops, rail and other demanding environments. The solutions combine low weight with anti-slip walking surfaces, corrosion resistance and low maintenance. The range includes footbridges, roof walkways, illuminated routes, ramps and elevated access walkways. Systems can be specified with support profiles, handrailing, pedestals and fixings to suit the loading, environment and layout of the project.

GRP walkways

Complete access routes for safe movement

Safe walkways are essential for operation, inspection, maintenance and escape. Our GRP systems create stable, anti-slip routes over process equipment, alongside railways, on rooftops and in other areas where traditional materials can become heavy, slippery or prone to corrosion.

The walking surface can be specified as open mesh d2 Dura Grating for effective drainage, or as solid Dura Slab panels where a continuous surface is required. The system can be completed with Dura Profile structural supports, Dura Handrail safety handrailing, treads, ramps and integrated lighting.

The low weight simplifies transport and installation, while GRP offers high resistance to moisture, salt and many chemicals. The result is a flexible walkway with a long service life and limited maintenance requirements.

Benefits of GRP walkways

Anti-slip walking surface

The gritted top surface provides a low slip risk and secure footing in both dry and wet conditions.

Low weight

Low self-weight panels and profiles simplify transport, handling and installation and can reduce the need for heavy lifting.

Corrosion resistant

GRP does not rust or rot, making it well suited to environments with moisture, salt, weather exposure and many chemicals.

Modular system

Walking surfaces, support profiles, handrailing, ramps and fixings can be combined into a solution tailored to the project.

Design and performance

Walkway systems specified for environment and loading

Our GRP walkways are built from components selected according to the application, loading, clear span and surrounding environment. The solution can include the walking surface, supporting structure, handrailing, stairs, ramps and fixings.

d2 Dura Grating is an open mesh GRP grating that provides effective drainage and suits locations where water, dirt or liquids need to pass through the walking surface. Dura Slab has a solid top surface and is used where light, water or objects must not pass through the structure.

On uneven or sloping substrates the walkway can be installed on adjustable pedestals to create a level and safe route. Handrailing can be fitted to one or both sides depending on the location of the walkway and the safety requirements of the project.

GRP components can be worked with suitable standard tools and installed without welding. This can shorten installation time and simplify adaptation on site.

Anti-slip

Proven performance under frequent use

The gritted surface of d² Dura Grating is developed for a low slip risk in both dry and wet conditions. Testing shows the surface retains 95 per cent of its anti-slip performance after one million footsteps.

Two walking surfaces

Open mesh grating or solid panel

Choose open mesh d² Dura Grating where effective drainage and airflow are needed. Choose Dura Slab or Solid Top where a solid surface is required and water, light or objects must not pass through the structure.

Adaptable

Adjustable pedestals for uneven substrates

Adjustable pedestals can be used to create a level walkway on sloping or uneven substrates. The solution suits rooftops, terraces and technical installations where height needs to be adjusted.

Dura Walkways

Four characteristics that simplify the project

Dura Composites walkway systems combine GRP grating, structural panels, support profiles and handrailing. The components can be adapted to both simple access walkways and complete elevated routes.

Safer

Anti-slip surfaces for work and access

The gritted walking surface helps reduce slip risk in rain and wet conditions. Open mesh grating also provides effective drainage where water and liquids may be present.

Lighter

Simpler transport and installation

GRP weighs considerably less than steel, which simplifies handling and installation. Many components can be lifted and installed by hand without welding.

Long lasting

Resilient in exposed environments

GRP does not rust or rot and normally requires no painting, galvanising or anti-corrosion treatment. This makes it well suited to industry, coastal sites, rail and technical facilities.

Complete system

Walking surface, structure, handrailing and lighting

Combine d² Dura Grating, Dura Slab, Dura Profile and Dura Handrail into one coherent solution. The system can also include stairs, ramps and integrated LED lighting.

Our range

Walkway solutions for different applications

We supply walkway systems for safe access across industry, construction, energy, rail, marine environments and technical infrastructure. Solutions are adapted to the loading, substrate, level changes and safety requirements of the site.

Illuminated GRP walkways

Integrated lighting for safer access routes

Dura TrackGlo is a walkway system in which energy efficient LED lighting is integrated directly into the GRP grating. The even light follows the route and makes edges, direction of travel, obstacles and level changes clearer in dark or poorly lit environments.

Because the lighting is built into the walkway, there is less need for standalone luminaires, bollards and visible cable runs along the route. This creates a clearer walking surface and can simplify installation, cleaning and future maintenance.

The system is particularly suited to rail environments, depots, industrial facilities, energy sites, ports, tunnels and other working areas where staff need to move safely during evenings and nights.

Clearly defined routes

Continuous light marks the direction, edges and level changes of the walkway and makes it easier to orientate in darkness.

Fewer obstructions

Integrated lighting reduces the need for standalone bollards, columns and visible cabling that can restrict the walking surface.

More even lighting

Light is distributed along the whole route, reducing dark areas and harsh contrasts.

Modular solution

The lighting is integrated into the GRP system and can be combined with walking surfaces, handrailing, stairs and support profiles.

For environments that need safe access around the clock

Illuminated GRP walkways can be used as access walkways, trackside routes and approaches to technical installations. The combination of anti-slip GRP grating and integrated lighting provides one coherent solution for both a safe walking surface and improved orientation.

An alternative to steel and timber

Lighter walkways with less maintenance

GRP walkways combine high strength with low weight. Compared with equivalent steel structures they can be easier to transport, lift and install, particularly on rooftops, in confined spaces and where heavy lifting is difficult.

The material does not rust or rot and normally requires no painting, galvanising or anti-corrosion treatment. Limited maintenance requirements can reduce costs and downtime during the service life of the walkway.

Open mesh GRP grating provides effective drainage, while solid panels can be used where a continuous walking surface is needed. Both can be combined with support profiles and handrailing for a complete system.

Simpler installation

The low weight can reduce the need for cranes, welding and heavy lifting equipment.

Less maintenance

GRP normally requires no painting, galvanising or anti-corrosion treatment.

Lower life cycle cost

A long service life and limited maintenance can reduce costs over time.

GRP walkways for industry and infrastructure

The walkway systems can be adapted to both new structures and the refurbishment of existing routes. They are particularly suitable where low weight, anti-slip performance, corrosion resistance or electrical insulation are required.

Long service life and reduced material use

Walkways developed for efficient use of resources

d2 Dura Grating is engineered to deliver high structural performance with lower weight and less material than comparable conventional GRP products. For certain product variants this can mean up to 33 per cent lower embodied CO₂e.

The low weight can also reduce loading on supporting structures and simplify transport and installation. The corrosion resistance of GRP and its limited maintenance requirements contribute to a long service life.

Dura Composites has developed solutions for handling installation offcuts and end-of-life GRP products. The material can be reused or processed into feedstock for new composite materials rather than going straight to landfill.
